About

Who We Are

Insight Meditation of the Mid-Columbia (IMMC) is a Buddhist meditation group located in south-central Washington State that practices in the Insight Meditation (Vipassana) tradition. However, anyone interested in meditation practice is welcome to join us. Prior to the pandemic we met several times a week for meditation in Richland and Kennewick, Washington. We also held discussion and study sessions, daylong meditation retreats, and meditation classes. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, all of our meetings, including the classes and retreats, are now offered online. You can find a description of our activities here.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We are aware that access to meditation and spiritual practice can be difficult for many people due to biases they have experienced due to race, ethnicity, age, economic security, religion, ability, gender, sexual orientation, and other aspects of their social setting. We commit to being open to anyone interested in meditation and spiritual practice. Our classes and programs are offered by donation, and are open to everyone regardless of ability to pay.

People

Insight Meditation of the Mid-Columbia is incorporated as a nonprofit religious corporation in the State of Washington. You can find out more about the people who guide the meditation group here.

Ethical Conduct

We believe that ethical conduct is the basis for meditation and spiritual practice. Because of that, the members of Insight Meditation of the Mid-Columbia aspire to follow the ethical guidelines of the Buddha, known as the five lay precepts:

  • We take the precept not to kill, but to cherish all life
  • We take the precept not to take what is not offered, but to be open and generous
  • We take the precept not to misuse our sexual energy, but to be faithful and kind
  • We take the precept not to lie, but to use gentle, truthful speech
  • We take the precept not to misuse intoxicants, but to keep the mind clear

If anyone ever feels that they are experiencing harm because the precepts are not being followed within the Sangha (the IMMC community), they are invited to contact the Board of Directors of the IMMC so that a path to reconciliation can be found. Please email the Board here.
